Sol y sombra: las vicisitudes del sombrero de fibra vegetal en la República Dominicana

A Altagracia Cordero, in memoriam

Abstract

This article undertakes the search for the cana (palm thatch) hat in the Dominican Republic from a historical perspective. The work intends to reveal ignored aspects of an artisan trade which is intimately tied to Dominican cultural traditions, especially those related to rural life. Meanwhile, it approaches the integrative function of cultural heritage, transmitted in this case by immigrants from the Canary Islands and their descendants in the three principal cana hat manufacturing centers that existed in the country.
