Abstract

This article makes a self-critical reflection of our previous approaches to the slave rebellions in the late eighteenth century in Spanish Santo Domingo, which we attributed almost exclusively to the influence of the Haitian Revolution. It has been in connection with the commemoration of the 200th anniversary of the first slave rebellion in America in 1521 when we have reviewed our work in the light of new approaches, realizing the 300 years of invisibility to which the resistance experience of the enslaved and the Afro-descendant populations of Santo Domingo. We now understand that the colonial gaze in the documents also biased our approach, limiting our ability to interpret the complex and far-reaching nature of the slave rebellion on the island.
