The different concepts of "campetence" are analyzed, as well as the models in vogue in Austria, Canada and the U.S.A., together with their apparition in the Dominican Republic. The curriculum must abandon its traditional outlook on education and adopt the consequences of this new model. The business world is demanding new occupational profiles from school graduates together with a notíon of competence and its meaning in any given work post. Emphasis is placed in taking the person as a whole and not as a cog in a wheel.
