Abstract

Afier sketching ways of measuring the magnitude of different types of corruption, the author shows us atable with the corruption indexes for fifty-two countries, offered in 1997 by a well-respected source. Despite its possible inaccuracies, these indexes exert pressure on countries with poor ratings, since they scare off possible foreign investors. This, plus the
political damage corruption brings on a country, the way it weighs down on entrepreneurial initiatives and, above all, the distortion it creates in the distribution of income and its possible uses, more than outweighs any possible advantage one could adduce for putting up with corruption.
