Abstract

With the beginning of the 80's, a steadily increasing stream of immigrants from the Dominican Republic begins to flow into Spain. With the overhaul of the European Union, Spain launches a new immigration law towards the end of the 80's, which has its effects upon this immigration. The article studies the extraordinary processes of regularization which where then put into play for the benefit of the illegal migrants, and the participation -or not- of the Dominicans in the same. It also studies the migratory chains, which pull the Dominicans into Spain, and the nets of information and support, which take them in. Although with the new regulations the Dominican immigrants face stricter control s, paradoxically the emigration flow from the Dominican Republic to Spain increases and gains consistency. The policies of labor contingents (geared to unfilled spots in the labor market), as well as the policies of family reunification and supporting the acquisition of the Spanish citizenship, help in this respect.
