Abstract

The author partially reconstructs the process of Spanish immigration in the Dominican Republic at the height of the Spanish emigration to America (1880 - 1930) on the basis of Iimited records and of the changing political and economical coordinates in the Caribbean. Also interesting is the involvement of both national states in the process. In 1927, for example, in response to the effort of the Dominican authorities to recruit the immigration of Spanish farmers, the Spanish government issues a warning through its Cuban embassy concerning the risks awaiting those interested.
