Abstract

Democracy has gone through a double turn in the last few decades. On the one
hand, the so called demise of Communism seems to declare the democratic
government model as the winner. On the other hand, in spite of the fact that
the democratic ideal is spreading and has become a widely shared goal,
criticisms abound about the way it functions and they come from multiple and
varied spheres. Based on the work by Joshua Cohen and Jürgen Habermas,
the article analyzes the deliberative democratic model as an alternative to the
dominant model of democracy. That is, the liberal individualist model.
