Abstract

Faced with the imperative of sustainable development, intervening poor Dominican neighborhoods becomes a government policy. Current actions aim at reducing risks of flooding and pollution that would be the main causes of the socio-economic vulnerabilities of these neighborhoods. This article analyzes two sanitation projects for canyons in Gran Santo Domingo. Both projects claim a sustainability approach that allows them to justify some arbitrary decisions in social, environmental and urban terms. The article exposes the results of an ethnographic research and long-term observations of these interventions and suggests that they provoke a deregulation of the ecological and social environmental balance of these barrios.
