Abstract

The article examines the opinions of five North American publications, from the beginning of the Cuban war of independence, on February 24, 1895, until the mediated independence of Cuba, on May 20, 1902. After presenting the Cuban and North American contexts, and framework of the war, the article introduces 19th-century North American Catholicism. The study shows the agreements and differences between the five publications when facing five questions: first, how they presented the luminous, and negative aspects of Spain? Second, how did they appreciate Cubans, their struggle, and their ability to govern themselves? Third, what position did they take regarding the American intervention in Cuba? Fourth, what analysis did they make of the ideology justifying the intervention? Fifth, what should be the task of the American intervention forces in Cuba? The article reveals the role played by race, religion, and American Manifest Destiny in motivating agreement and disagreement among publications, that disregarded how did Cubans answer the same questions.
