Résumé
L’article examine les opinions de cinq publications nordaméricaines, depuis le début de la guerre d’indépendance cubaine, le 24 février 1895, jusqu’à l’indépendance protégée de Cuba, le 20 mai 1902. Après avoir présenté les contextes cubain et nordaméricain, le cadre de la guerre, l’article introduit le catholicisme nord-américain du XIXe siècle. L’étude montre les accords et les différences des cinq publications face à cinq questions : premièrement, comment elles ont présenté les lumières et les ombres de l’Espagne. Deuxièmement, comment ils appréciaient les Cubains, leur lutte et leur capacité à se gouverner. Troisièmement, quelle position ont-ils prise face à l’intervention américaine à Cuba. Quatrièmement, quelle analyse ont-ils faite de l’idéologie justifiant l’intervention et cinquièmement, quelle devrait être la tâche des forces d’intervention américaines à Cuba. L’article révèle le rôle joué par la race, la religion et l’American Manifest Destiny dans la motivation des accords et des désaccords entre les publications. Les grands absents étaient les Cubains.
