This article suggests that in the today’s globalized and neoliberal world there
is a crisis in the educational system. Education has serious quality and access
problems, as well as structural ones. Analyzing the Chilean context, which
is considered as a paradigmatic case, the author concludes that educational
systems are subjected to multiple tensions and the right to education cannot
only be reduced to more schooling, and less if education is offered through
market mechanisms that segment educational systems.
