Resumen
El artículo examina las opiniones de cinco publicaciones norteamericanas, desde el inicio de la guerra de independencia cubana, 24 de febrero de 1895, hasta la independencia tutelada de Cuba, el 20 de mayo de 1902. Luego de presentar los contextos cubano y norteamericano, marco de la guerra, el artículo introduce al catolicismo norteamericano del XIX. El estudio muestra los acuerdos y diferencias de las cinco publicaciones al enfrentar cinco preguntas: primero, cómo presentaron las luces y sombras de España. Segundo, cómo valoraban a los cubanos, su lucha y su capacidad de auto gobernarse. Tercero, qué postura tomaron respecto de la intervención americana en Cuba. Cuarto, que análisis hacían de la ideología justificadora de la intervención y quinto, cuál debía ser la tarea de las fuerzas interventoras americanas en Cuba. El artículo revela el papel jugado por la raza, la religión y el Destino Manifiesto americano en motivar acuerdos y desacuerdos entre las publicaciones. Los grandes ausentes fueron los cubanos.
