Abstract

The authors aim at offering an alternative approximation of poverty in the Dominican Republic. Partially referring to the multídimensional conception of poverty put forward by the World Bank in its latest World Development Report, a conception that can be seen as a sustainable alternative to income poverty assessment, the study critically analyses the two most important studies that have been carried out in the Dominican Republic: the Living Standard Measurement Survey, led by the Dominican Central Bank in 1998, and the Dominican Poverty Report published by the World Bank in 2001. The authors conclude by making epistemological observations about poverty studíes in general, underlining the limits of the "Participatory Poverty Assessment" methodology, which provides the basis for the new multidimensional conception of poverty, and discussing its implications for poverty reduction policy-making.
